Designer or artist!

We all live in a visual culture, images are all around: cartoons, games, films, clips, web pages, commercials, photo’s, works of art. However, that does not – by a long way – mean that everyone who produces images, is a designer or an artist. Professional artists and designers strive for the best imaginable, even better than ‘something attractive’ or ‘something usable’. They want to experiment, innovate and push back boundaries, without fear of disappointments or setbacks in the interim. As an artist, designer or teacher you must be able to think independently and conceptually. You should acquire the knowledge and the skills to develop project ideas through to realization, and to convey them to third parties. That is why these are not ‘normal’ jobs for which you can study in a run-of-the-mill way. IT is much more a question of the mentality, the attitude that you look at things in the world. It is a way of life.

If you feel that this is what you want to achieve, and think that you are capable of this, then you are welcome at the Willem de Kooning Academy. The Academy will assist you in your acquisition and development of these competencies. You should regard the Academy as a centre of facilitation and expertise, from which you may draw as much as possible while a student. However, ultimately, it is you who bears the responsibility for your personal development.
